Villagers protesting mining operation kill police officer — Renhe, China
Angry villagers protesting a local mining operation in southwest China attacked security forces with machetes and clubs, leaving one policeman dead and 15 injured, local authorities said Friday.
The riot occurred on Wednesday when police were dispatched to a government building in Yunnan province’s Renhe township to try and persuade villagers staging a protest in front of the building to leave, authorities said.
“Suddenly villagers attacked the police with machetes and wooden clubs, leaving 16 injured, one of whom died later while receiving treatment,” said a statement released by the government of Lijiang — which oversees Renhe.
“During the incident, the police maintained a high level of restraint and not one villager was injured,” it added.
Earlier this month, locals from Xiaoganqing village complained that the development of a local coal mine was endangering their lands and demanded their homes be moved and that they be compensated, the statement said.
A spokeswoman for the Lijiang government told AFP those complaints went unanswered and so the villagers moved their protest to the Renhe government building, where they stayed one week until the violence on Wednesday. afphttp://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2012\04\21\story_21-4-2012_pg14_3

Miners riot over pay and conditions in deadly protests — Bumbuna, Sierra Leone
Two days of rioting over pay by workers from African Minerals’ Sierra Leone mine have left one woman dead and at least six injured, witnesses and medical staff said.
The company said operations had seen “no significant impact”.
“The government authorities are treating the protest as a matter of civil disobedience,” a company spokesman said of the unrest which took place in the central town of Bumbuna, 15 km (10 miles) from African Minerals’ Tonkolili mine.
The rioting began on Tuesday and went through into Wednesday. The mood calmed down by Thursday, although local people said African Minerals staff had not returned to work.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) there were shots all over the place,” Nancy Turay, a 62-year old Bumbuna resident said.
African Minerals’ shares traded fractionally lower at 566 pence in early London dealings.
African Minerals made its first trial shipment of ore from Tonkolili mine in November last year. Shipments from the mine are due to help Sierra Leone to what the IMF estimates at 35.9 percent growth this year, one of the highest rates in the world.
The rioting began with a protest over pay and conditions, with locals aggrieved by what they said were the higher wages received by expatriates.
“Some of the expats are really idle,” Foday Daboh, a construction worker for African Minerals and one of the protest’s organisers, told Reuters.
While police confirmed one death, local Superintendent Alfred Dassama denied his men had used excessive force.
“We tried to engage them with tear gas, but the situation became uncontrollable,” he said.
Sierra Leone, which will hold presidential elections in November, recently stirred controversy with the purchase of $4.5 million of weaponry for its police force, including heavy machine guns and grenade launchers.

Laptops and iPads stolen from SUV on Mitt Romney’s campaign — San Diego, CA
Laptops and iPads containing sensitive information about Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney’s campaign were stolen from an SUV in San Diego last week.
The electronics were stolen last Friday from a rental car parked car in San Diego, the Romney campaign confirmed Tuesday. The items belonged to two Romney campaign staffers. The thefts were first reported by KGTV, a local San Diego TV station.
Two laptops, two iPads and two handheld radios were taken.
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul called the incident an “unfortunate inconvenience” but said the campaign wasn’t worried about the release of any sensitive information. She said the campaign didn’t suspect the items were stolen for political reasons.

Man impersonating security carries out $162,000 theft day after Black Friday — Miami, FL
The morning after the biggest shopping day of the year, a man dressed as a Brinks security guard carried out his biggest heist yet.
“This is not your run of the mill $100, $200 theft. This is $162,000 worth of cash. It’s not credit card slips. It’s not money orders, it’s actual, tangible cash,” Sunrise Police Detective Luis Fernandez said.
Police believe the man in Aéropostale’s surveillance video to be 24-year-old John Mortimer. They say he pulled off his daring steal on Nov. 26 – the day after Black Friday – at Aéropostale at Sawgrass Mills.
“You can see it’s a full uniform complete with an identity badge,” he said. “Everything’s embroidered.”
It looked so authentic, police later had to confirm with Brinks that he in fact had a costume.
“No one was any wiser, they let him right in, he walked right to the back of the store, the manager gave him the deposits, as he’s done every day on his shift,” Fernandez added.
Mortimer walked right out the front door.
“Very brazen, this is something that took a lot of planning,” Fernandez said.
Police believe he might have had help from a store employee, and that he had at least two accomplices.
The first break in the case came when Plantation Police recovered a stolen car that turned out to be Mortimer’s getaway car with evidence inside it.
“They find what appears to be a Brinks hat, a Brinks uniform, a Brinks bag, a gun and a gun belt,” Sunrise Police spokesperson Michelle Eddy said.
Mortimer has a history of petit theft, according to police. They are offering $1,000 for information leading to his arrest.
No one answered the door at Mortimer’s Lauderhill home on Blueberry Court on Wednesday.
“That would take guts, I know,” said neighbor Tina Williams. “He wouldn’t strike me as a person that would do that.”

Anarchists attack Health Services center after they release reports to police — Berkeley, CA
The communique:
“Early Monday, March 19th we attacked the University Health Services at the Tang Center on the UC-Berkeley campus. We targeted the Tang Center because it has recently been made public that so-called ‘care givers’ at the center turned over medical reports about several comrades who went there for treatment. These individuals went to the center for help after being beaten by University police during an Occupy demonstration on Nov 9th.
We glued the locks on ten doors, smashed several windows, and re-decorated the building with a few anti-snitching slogans.
This snitch institution operates under the pretense of helping people, and yet rats them out to the exact same people who assault them and put them in cages. This comes as no surprise. The health system offered to us by the state and capitalism only serves the interests of its masters: profit and control.
While we smashed and glued, we were thinking of comrades in St. Louis who were simultaneously arrested and hospitalized over the weekend by SLPD. Also in our thoughts, Tortuga in Chile, whose hospital room has also been his jail cell. We must also mention Justin Solondz, sentenced to seven years because of the testimony of rat snitches of the Green Scare. It is obvious that the State’s health institutions function like a prison or like a border wall, locking some inside while locking many more out.
SNITCHES WATCH OUT: THIS IS JUST A WARNING!
IT WILL BE WORSE FOR THE NEXT SNITCH(ES) TO BE OUTED!FUCK THE TANG CENTER, UCPD, OPD, SFPD, SLPD, … fuck it, all of ‘em.
STRENGTH AND LOVE TO THE N9 DEFENDANTS AND ALL OCCUPY PRISONERS!
Vengeance Committee”

Police officer shot at in apparent sniper attack — Atlanta, GA
An Atlanta police officer was shot in the leg at a Little 5 Points restaurant Thursday evening.
Atlanta Police spokesman Officer John Chafee said Officer Dexter Toomer stopped at the restaurant at around 10:30 p.m. to get a soft drink and was returning to his patrol car when multiple shots rang out. One of the shots struck Toomer in the lower part of his left leg.
Chafee said the shots were fired from a nearby building, and it appears that Toomer was the intended target.
The wounded officer called for help and several officers responded to search the area for a suspect to no avail.
Toomer is reported in stable condition and good spirits at Grady Memorial Hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery and should be released from the hospital on Friday.
No one has been arrested; Chafee said Toomer did not see who shot him.
Authorities said they have no motive for the shooting.
